The Stay Factor : Keeping the Best


I attended this training facilitated by Allied Domecq International trainor, Mr. Oscar Herrin. 

According to Alan Greenspan , " The limiting factor to continuing growth and prosperity is PEOPLE.
There are simply not enough people to feed the machine ".

The challenges goes ,

Think about a job you enjoyed and stayed with at least two years. 

Write down the three reasons you stayed with that job.

My present job I have been here for 7 years , the previous one 15 years...does this mean  I really enjoyed my job ? Or is it because I belong to a different generation ?

Three reasons why I stayed :

1. career advancement
2. the perks and the benefits
3. I get to do what I love , training on personal development

What is the cost of turn over ?

Pay may be the reason they say they are leaving but it is never why they stay

If you based it on the present minimum wage , it amounts to almost an annual cost of P 150,072.00 .
What is the cost to replace people leaving the company , about 70% of this annual pay amounts to P 105,050.40 because you have to train again the new hiree.

Is money the only reason why people leave ?

Is money the deciding factor ?

As an HR practitioner when you do exit interviews , most of the time , money is not the real problem but more on how they were treated inside the company.

People rarely quit a company , they more often leave bad bosses.

So how do we know what our employees wants ?

ASK ...

We just cannot guess ... we have to know what they want .  Why wait until they leave us ?
But what if I can't give them what they want ?

Employees love being asked . Besides there are always some thing that we can do

What if you don't ask , they will leave us anyway ?

Questions to ask Employees :

1. What would you really like to do - now or in the future ?

2. Are you challenged in your day to day work ? what would provide more interest or challenge ?

3. What would make life better for you on the job ?

4. Do you feel recognized for your accomplishments ? What else could you do ?

5. What will keep you here ? What might entice you away ?

Recognition

The new gen , Gen x , Gen why , Gen Z , they crave for recognition . They love being the center of attention and praise for their good deeds . You have to be specific on what the right thing that was done so as not to confuse their monkey minds.

How do we show recognitions ?

Through performance reviews , recognition programs and awards , special assignments and privileges.

What's the best recognition program for employees ?

What happens if I train them and they leave ????

Better Question to ask :

What happens if I don't train them and they stay ?

According to study , the gen Xers will stay in the company that provide ongoing training and career growth.

Employees need to learn more skills to be productive .

Are you the Best Boss ? or are you a JERK ?

Jerk - intimidates , withhold praise , slams doors , belittle people , withhold information , acts arrogant ,set impossible goals/deadlines , humiliates or embarrass others, blames others , motivate by fear

So are you a best boss or a JERK ?

So how will we know if we are a best boss or a jerk ?

BUILD TEAMS

Set well defined duties and responsibilities where every one has a role to play and together as a team we achieve our set targets . There is supervision done and employees are empowered to make well defined decision process because there are set rules and procedures to follow.

SHARE INFORMATION

Employees personal goals are aligned with the organizational goals and strategies. Employees are aware where the company is going in the future. There is a training program to gain the skills needed in the job.

FOCUS ON THE FAMILY

Work life balance is a recent buzz words in organizational settings. We work hard but we also have to attend to our family needs to have this work life balance.  A study showed that 62 % prefers a time off with his family versus a monetary bonus.

So how do we know what is important to our employees ?

If we want dramatic results then we need to make dramatic change .
